One taste and we know you'll agree - There's Nothing Like a Real Italian.
"Real Italian" is the way we describe all the food on our menu, but it's also the name of our incredibly popular signature sandwich that has become a veritable Icon.
In 1902, Italian immigrant Giovanni Amato started selling fresh baked rolls to his fellow countrymen working on the docks of Portland, Maine. At the workers' request, Giovanni added a little meat, cheese and fresh vegetables and the "Real Italian" was born.
In 1972, another Italian immigrant named Dominic Reali bought the business after working at the original India Street shop for 7 years. Dominic perfected the "Real Italian" by choosing Greek olives over black olives, a zestier pickle and his own specially blended oil.
Today, the Amato's "Real Italian" sandwich is universally craved by countless customers from every age, sex, race and socioeconomic status. It's somewhat messy, surprisingly tangy and altogether different from any sandwich you've ever had. As Dominic Reali himself has claimed for years:
"Try it 3 times, and you'll be hooked for life!"

Are You a Good Fit for Amato's?
Restaurant experience, while desirable, is not absolutely necessary, particularly if you have other business skills that are applicable. A quality restaurateur must be closely associated with any potential franchisee.
As an Amato's franchisee, you get the right to own and operate an Amato's Sandwich Shop for ten years with two five-year renewal options.
