Allstate Insurance Partners with BoaterExam.com to Offer Free Online Boating Courses for Virginians until September 15, 2012

FAIRFAX, Va., Aug. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Allstate Insurance Company today announced a new partnership with BoaterExam.com to offer a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Virginia-approved online boating safety course free to all boaters interested in obtaining their Virginia Boater Education certification card.

Until September 15, 2012, Allstate will pick up the $29.95 course fee for any Virginian taking the online boating safety course, and boaters who complete the course are eligible for a 5% education discount on their Allstate boat insurance policy. To access the free online boating course, go to www.boaterexam.com/allstate.

'Consumer safety is a top priority for Allstate and this new partnership illustrates our commitment to the safety of Virginia boaters,' says Dave Prendergast, Field Senior Vice President for Allstate, Capital Region. 'We expect many boaters to sign up for this free course and the discounted insurance offer.'

As of July 1, 2012, Virginia law requires thatall personal watercraft operators regardless of age must take a boating safety course and boat operators ages 30 and younger need to take a boating safety course.

Virginia law specifies that motorboats with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater (including boats documented by the U. S. Coast Guard) and personal watercraft (i.e. jet ski) are covered under the law. Sailboats do not have to meet the requirement unless the sailboat has a motor that is 10 hp or greater (whether or not the engine is running). A canoe does not have to meet the requirement, nor does a kayak, rowboat, or other manually propelled boats.

According to the Virginia of Game and Inland Fisheries, Virginia now has over 250,000 registered motorboats (including about 30,000 personal watercraft). The agency says that over the past five years Virginia has recorded over 700 recreational boating accidents that resulted in nearly 100 fatalities.
