Sandy Kozar, of Maryville, Tenn., designed a kitchen that opens to a dining room with a big island for entertaining, casual eating and cleaning up. The space includes several unique built-ins: a coffee center along with an adjacent refrigerator/freezer.

Linda McCall, of Lake Tahoe, Nev., chose to create a fashionable mountain retreat look in her featured kitchen. Texture abounds in this fabulous space: quartzite for the floor; native granite for the walls, leathered granite for the island, and polished granite for the perimeter counter-tops, all offset by warm wood on cabinets and beams.

Judy Underwood, of Bonita Springs, Fla., used multiple colors of glass tile on back-splashes and in crushed glass set in epoxy for counter-tops, plus black painted wood cabinets to fashion a bold contemporary vibe in a condo set a amid a golf course.

The new book shows how kitchens “have been transformed from a purely utilitarian workspace to a culinary-family-friends’ mecca where everyone congregates. While kitchens in condos and small houses may still be limited in square footage, even a tiny galley-style space is often now open to living and dining areas in loft-style arrangement for better camaraderie and conversation.”

It presents a step-by-step guide to creating your ideal kitchen, is richly-illustrated with inspiring kitchen layouts of 13 types of kitchens.
